Quartz Movements

Quartz watches use a battery and a small quartz crystal. The crystal oscillates at a very consistent rate, which is converted into an electrical signal by the electronic circuit to move the hands. Because they’re so accurate and easy to service, quartz watches are popular for everyday wear.

Watchmaking is About Precision

Each part in a watch movement is made to very tight tolerances. A speck of dirt, a bit too much or too little oil, or a part slightly out of place can cause the watch to run poorly. In watchmaking, you work in a clean environment, with clean hands and clean tools, and you make sure every part is in place before the movement is put back together. You take the time to check every part and make sure everything is in place.

Watch Maintenance

All watches, including quartz watches, need to be serviced from time to time. The oil inside the movement will break down over time, parts will wear, and accuracy will suffer. A service will include disassembling the movement, cleaning it, replacing any worn parts, adding fresh oil, and reassembling the movement to test its performance. Servicing a watch properly will make it last longer and run better.
